14Open call opportunity
This open call invited designers and makers to engage with the project and experiment with coppiced wood.
Three projects were selected from 18 proposals submitted by practitioners based in London and beyond. Participants were given access to coppiced hazel sourced from Andy’s Hales Wood in Essex and had four weeks to develop their artefacts.
The initiative created a space to share the system, gather feedback, and observe how others approached the material. It encouraged participants to respond through their own practice, exploring how the irregularity, growth rhythms, and regenerative logic of coppiced wood can shape new objects.
The selected projects are:
Jacob Marks – Coppiced Brush(es)
Brushes that explore how coppiced materials, rich in biodiversity, can be used to create everyday utilitarian objects.
Inés Miño Izquierdo – Trampoline Media Console
A hand-turned piece in coppiced hazel and sapele, capturing a moment of growth held in tension between refinement and rawness.
Takumi Ise & Marco Ciacci – ConTorno
A minimal intervention where a bent branch holds a mirror, allowing the natural form of the wood to guide the object.
The projects were exhibited at Dropcity (via Sammartini 38-60 20125) during Milan Design Week as part of Material Futures 2026.
