Charlie (Lake District)

Charlie Whinney steam-bends naturally grown coppiced timber from the Lake District.

A designer and carpenter, and alumnus of the MA Regenerative Design at CSM, he first introduced me to coppicing at a stage when my research was still broad and open.

Staying at his place in the Lake District, I was able to learn from his deep material knowledge and his way of working directly with local woodlands. His practice is closely connected to the surrounding community, including the Coppice Co-op.

This experience reinforced the project’s interest in designing with, rather than against, material variability.

What Grows Again is Antoine Léger’s final master’s project;
Unit 3: Material Impact.
